We
are proud to have preserved memorabilia from the greatest,
most luxurious, fastest and largest ship ever to cross the
oceans, the S.S. United States.

The Construction of the S. S. United States represents
the most advanced technology of its day and has not been duplicated.
It was an aluminum super-structure completely different from
anything previously created. Its safety features were superior
to any other ship and has yet to be equaled.
The S. S. United States was a four
compartment ship, indicating it would not sink until four
of its compartments were filled with water. It had enough
room for 2,000 passengers and 1,050 crew members. It also
had 800 state rooms with individual climate control. It was
able to travel 10,000 miles without stopping for fuel, water
or supplies. Its horsepower was 240,000 and its length was
that of 5 city blocks, 990 ft. long. Its height was that of
a 12-story building and its width was 101 ft., 6 in. The ship
never made use of all of its horsepower.
On her maiden voyage in 1952, the ship broke
the speed record for TransAtlantic crossing by an ocean liner,
at the speed of 48 miles per hour through the water. It still
holds that record and became the proud recipient of the Blue
Riband and the Hales Trophy, a most prestigious award.
She had two pairs of unique five-bladed propellers
which were never revealed or seen by anyone other than key
personnel; thus, the secret of the ship’s incredible
speed was kept a mystery during its entire active live. It
is interesting that she never had more than 3/4 of the ship's
potential power ever used, thereby leaving blank the answer
to the question of what her top speed truly was.
Glamorous items include the first-class dining
salon with the tables and chairs. Fine sculpturing aluminum
sculptures by the artist Austin Purves, Jr. are for your enjoyment
here at the Restaurant. It is interesting that aluminum was
not only used in the ship’s construction, but also in
the ship’s decor and art.
The elegant lamps seen in the Windmill Point
Restaurant stairwell were originally found in the Duke and
Duchess of Windsor Suite, Upper Deck, U-90-92. Located in
the U. S. Lounge upstairs is the famous kidney-shaped bar
that was located on the Promenade Deck which was the location
of the first-class salon where the Kings, Queens and notables
had leisure. The ballroom tables, as well as the original
bar stools with the names of some notables who actually sat
on them, are seen. Everything has been kept in its original
state, and there has been cleaning only. Romance and mystery
enshrouds these artifacts.
During her days of glory, the S. S. United
States bore across the often scowling and dark waters
of the North Atlantic with the great and famous as well as
the poor and the unknown aboard.
You will see flanking the end of the dining
room here at the Restaurant the “Quinn Lux” figure,
symbolic of America life, that was called the “Expressions
in Freedom.”
We are proud to have preserved for your pleasure,
memorabilia from the greatest ship, the most luxurious, the
fastest, the largest ship ever to sail. She has never been
duplicated and she is one of a kind, just as our great nation,
the United States of America is one of a kind. She truly had
style, grace, strength, space, charm, pace, form and liberty
that we salute. The United States and we at Windmill
Point hope that we have provided you with a nostalgia of yesteryear
in its original state, which is a priceless heritage for our
continued growth as a nation of power, beauty and peace for
years to come. We are sharing with you this homey warmth felt
aboard the S. S. United States now in Windmill Point
Restaurant. |
